2002 Khayelitsha Initiative
Thanks to many kind individuals and organizations, the 2002 Khayelitsha Initiative
was a complete success! Over the course of a single month, over 60,000 books were collected, packed, and shipped to Cape Town,
South Africa. The books arrived safely on September 5th, 2002 in the Port of Cape Town.
In Cape Town, funding was recently received from the National Lottery to
expand the current library, build shelves, and buy computers. A third of the books are being used in the expanded library.
The thousands of National Geographics were donated to all the schools in Kensington and Khayeltisha for craft and other projects.
Other books are being used to generate funds at book sales, where the proceeds will go towards purchasing books in Xhosa,
the indigenous language of the Khayelitsha Township.
The 40 foot shipping container that was used to transport the books to Cape
Town now has another purpose- training firefighters how to save lives. The City of Cape Town Fire Fighters put in partitions,
office furniture, and now fill it with smoke and teach recruits how to save people in dense smoke and low visibility.
SF Book Drive '05
9,000 books collected!
Thanks to so many big-hearted donors and volunteers, the SF Book Drive 'O5 was a huge success. We
collected ~9,000 books for three locations in South Africa:
- S.H.A.W.C.O. (The Student Health and Welfare Community Organization),
Khayelitsha
- The Cape Town
Public Library System, Cape Town
- The Uniondale School, Uniondale
This drive could not have been done without the help from so many generous people. On behalf the grateful kids in South
Africa, thank you so much to everyone who pitched in!
